08/17/2010 - I Went to HS w/ Dierks Bentley

I Went to High School with Dierks Bentley

Country music entertainer, Dierks Bentley and I both graduated class of 1993 from Lawrenceville Preparatory, a co-ed boarding school located just outside the town of Princeton, New Jersey.  In the 90's Dierks was a skinny blonde, decidedly cute, and with noticeably large hands. We were both on the ski team in our senior year (the year they finally allowed girls to join), and twice we had the same English class. Before a class one day, trying to connect over music, I asked him, "Do you listen to Traffic?" and he answered," Um, I mean, I can kinda hear the cars from my room . . ." That was the last time I tried. Dierks Bentley didn't know the 1970s rock band Steve Winwood pioneered, because in high school Dierks listened to Metallica. The now country pop superstar also dated my roommate when we were juniors. It's through her that I know about the Metallica fetish, as well as the fact that in Dierk's case "what they say about guys who have big hands" is completely true.

Alumni from Lawrenceville return in force for the first year reunion. It was at a reunion houseparty in 1994 that I first remember seeing Dierks playing guitar and singing.  He was casually posted up in a corner of the dining room, teaching a friend the lyrics to some songs he had recently learned. What was he playing? Not Metallica. He was enamored with traditional bluegrass tunes now. The significance of this moment was lost on me; I did not know that his interest in Americana music was the start of a path that would lead to his becoming Dierks Bentley of "What Was I Thinking" hit single fame and a darling of CMTV. Whatever turns that path took as it unfolded, the end result was that my classmate learned the art of how to write a damn good country song. And it made him famous.

I had not seen Dierks playing live music since that afternoon in '94 until I went out to see my fellow alum at The Ventura County Fair on Thursday, August 12. I sat there in the stands, munching Kettle Corn, thinking how I used to listen to more country music in high school than I do now. Our "old boy" New England prep school was the closest one of its kind to the Mason Dixon Line, and being so, it had a large contingent of Southern boys who loved and promoted country music. Dierks not only didn't listen to country in high school, he wasn't one of the campus musicians either. Was this guy I once knew now a completely transformed person? I got my answer when he took to the stage. I noticed that for one thing, he's not scrawny anymore. His hair too is filled out into a big coif of curls, but he wasn't wearing a cowboy hat, and he had on a flannel shirt, just like in my photos from ski team practice. After his first song he addressed the crowd in a throaty country voice: "I heard it was crazy here on Monday night (referring to Miranda Lambert's show) . . . I won't accept anything less than crazy here tonight. You gotta give us all you got. We're gonna get loose, and loud, and start the weekend off right!" A red cup appeared in his hand moments later . . . Yep, that settled it for me--that's the Dierks I remember from high school.   (Nicole Fuller, Santabarbaranightout.com staff writer)

08/17/2010 - Tim Beutler: Why You Should Be A Fan

Tim Beutler (pronounced "Butler"), best known for his role as drummer in the Santa Barbara based band, Oso, wanted to sit down for coffee with me at Daily Grind this week to discuss his music career and solo projects. Tim, who is a self-proclaimed "Jack of all trades,"has been playing drums for 20 years. His uncle gave him a drum set at age 12. His parents  proceeded to set him up in the barn on their sprawling Michigan property where he would play for hours on end, even in the dead of winter (wearing a full snowsuit). He tried a few other instruments in grade school, but says, "Drums were it they made my decision to 'do music.'" At age 16, he when he saw a band "with three guys, no drummer," play in a local theatre, he approached them and thus was born Tim's first band, "Howsyerday." Tim moved from Michigan to Santa Cruz on "a band leap of faith" at age 18 to pursue music with Howsyerday. The band recorded an album and played together for three years in Santa Cruz before they broke up. Tim remembers, "At that point, I decided I wanted to go to school for music, to study music, not just play drums and work in a health food store." Tim enrolled in Cabrillo Junior College in Santa Cruz in 2001 and took every music class he could before transferring to UCSB in 2004 where he earned his B.A. in music with an emphasis in composition. He has taught electronic music courses, written a 20 minute-three-movement string symphony, and is versed in music recording and engineering. Add to the list that he has also played piano for over ten years, and along the way picked up guitar, bass, and accordion, then you can see how the "Jack of all trades" label is fitting.

The year he graduated from college, 2004, is the same year that Oso formed in Santa Barbara. It's also the year that he received a Fullbright scholarship to teach English in Germany. But he turned it down "for a number of reasons." First, yes, because of Oso, but also because he had been accepted into graduate school and wanted to continue his formal study of music. (He went on to earn his Master's of Arts and Music at UCSB.) He says that ever since he almost moved to Germany, he's held it as a dream deferred and, "always had the bug."  Oso is on sabbatical at present, with plans to reconvene in June of 2011. Now that there are no real responsibilities, Tim is finally taking off. He believes he will be welcomed in Berlin. "I've got friends there and the key of musicianship to unlock almost any musical situation, to improve it by being there and playing. That's what I'm hoping for. It's a fun city, it's huge, there are a lot of cool people around."

Tim has a few solo gigs lined up for Santa Barbara this month before he goes abroad in the first week of September. What does a drummer play when he plays solo gigs?? Tim has a large bag of tricks ranging from folk to experimental electronica, and likes to adapt his sets to audience and venue. At a place like Biko House in Isla Vista where he plays this Thursday, he will go the most versatile route of making live, improvised, electric, looping, intertwined soundscapes with his laptop. He says he "likes the thrill of being in the moment, paying attention to catch the creative impulses as they arise." I saw his singer songwriter style at Jitters Cafe last Friday. He played quirky pop and love songs on his guitar and keyboard. The standout song for me was one in which he wonders why there are no singles bars or rooms for rent in airports, because wouldn't it be easier to pass the time there if you could get a little action? Friday, August 27 Tim plays at Chinos and plans to do a little bit of both folk and experimental styles. You can get a taste of Tim's drumming on Oso's first CD titled "Harm Reduction." Tim has no official CD himself, but has "a lot of stuff recorded that's in the process of being produced into a first album." I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens when he gets back to town. If you can, try to get on his fan list before he goes. (Nicole Fuller, Santabarbaranightout.com staff writer)

06/08/2010 - A Little History on Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is a city in Santa Barbara County, California, United States. Situated on an east-west trending section of coastline, the longest such section on the West Coast of the United States, the city lies between the steeply-rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the sea. Santa Barbara's climate is often described as Mediterranean, and the city is sometimes referred to as the "American Riviera." [1] As of the census of 2000, the city had a population of 92,325 while the contiguous urban area, which includes the cities of Goleta and Carpinteria, along with the unincorporated regions of Isla Vista, Montecito, Mission Canyon, Hope Ranch, Summerland, and others, had an approximate population of 220,000. In addition to being a popular tourist and resort destination, the city has a robust economy which includes a large service sector, education, technology, health care, finance, agriculture, manufacturing, and local government. In 2004, the service sector accounted for fully 35% of local employment.[2] Education in particular is well-represented, with five institutions of higher learning on the south coast (the University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, Antioch University, and the Brooks Institute of Photography.) The Santa Barbara Airport serves the city, as does Amtrak. U.S. Highway 101 connects the Santa Barbara area with Los Angeles to the south and San Francisco to the north. Behind the city, in and beyond the Santa Ynez Mountains, is the Los Padres National Forest, which contains several remote wilderness areas.
